SimplyCT: Serving CT Families; Closing the Poverty Gap: Using GetCTC as the gateway financial tool to assit low income CT residents

SimplifyCT.org, a Connecticut-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is pleased to announce the continuation of the Federal Child Tax Credit Program. Although other Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) programs shut down at the end of the regular tax season in April, SimplifyCT works to guarantee that families are able to receive up to $3,600 per child via the Federal Child Tax Credit Program. SimplifyCT will continue this support through the end of the program this fall.

What is the Child Tax Credit?

The Child Tax Credit (CTC) Program is a part of the American Rescue Act. This program was expanded by Congress to allow parents to receive up to $3,600 annually for children under the age of 6 and $3,000 annually for children between the ages of 6 and 17. The Child Tax Credit is a direct cash payment made from the IRS/Treasury Department and was only extended by Congress for one year, through 2022. It is for this reason that it is imperative that every family acts quickly to receive the Child Tax Credit that they are entitled to.

How Does It Work?

In order to receive the Child Tax Credit, families with children younger than 18 on December 31, 2021 need to file a simple tax form, or a tax return, depending on their income. Families need to file before the end of the program, which is currently scheduled for mid-November 2022. To receive free help, families can connect with SimplifyCT about the Child Tax Credit in person (at specific locations), over the phone, and online at www.SimplifyCT.org, and click the Get Started Now button. All families need to start their tax return is a Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identity Number (ITIN). If you did not file tax returns in the past year, you are still entitled to these payments and SimplifyCT can file back taxes, all at no charge.

“It’s so very important that as many CT families as possible complete a return and get these cash payments that they are eligible for. People need to understand that the IRS does NOT share any of the data with any other government branch, and filing for this cash payment does NOT impact any other Federal or State benefits that a family may be receiving. This program is hugely impactful for families, and we need to spread the word about it as much as possible.”
